The end of 2020 is fast approaching. Besides the election, what does this mean? That it’s time to revisit one of my original posts. As you may recall, most dental residencies charge exorbitant tuition. If our medical colleagues knew, they would shake their heads in disbelief. Where does UCLA vs. USC come into this? Back in 2017, I tallied that the direct cost of attending USC Orthodontics for residency came out to $269,299 (yes tuition, no salary). To match at UCLA Orthodontics, on the other hand, netted you $158,824 (no tuition, yes salary). The raw net difference stood at $428,123. How do the Bruins fare three years later in 2020? Let’s find out.
The Cost of Becoming a USC Orthodontist in 2020
Let’s start by taking a look at the total direct costs to attend residency at USC for orthodontics. Yes, that’s the sound of your jaw hitting the floor. Tuition alone in 2020 brings you to $315,828 over three years. Go Trojans! Don’t forget that you have to live somewhere and have a meal every now and then, too. This total does not include cost of living expenses. In 2017, tuition alone was $269,299.
The Cost of Becoming a UCLA Orthodontist in 2020
Now let’s take a look at the total direct costs to attend residency at UCLA for orthodontics. As GME housestaff, UCLA residents start with a salary of $61,903 in their first year. This only increases year after year. In other words, over three years at UCLA Ortho, you’d be making at least $185,709. In 2017, your three-year salary came out to $158,824.
Final Outcome?
In 2017, the net difference of attending UCLA vs. USC for ortho was $428,123. In 2020, the net difference has ballooned to $501,537. Both programs are 3 years in length and based in Los Angeles, California. Both programs offer you a specialty certificate to practice as an orthodontist. Would you rather be a USC orthodontist and be half a million in debt, or be a UCLA orthodontist and owe nothing? The answer is clear. Take note, ortho applicants.
Go Bruins!
